Overview

GameCo requires analysis to inform the development of new games.  The executives need to get a better understanding of the video game market to achieve a maximum return on investment.  I performed analysis on the video game data set to figure out what types of games would earn the most revenue and what regions to invest in.

Key Questions

Are certain types of games more popular than others?

What other publishers will likely be the main competitors in certain markets?

Have any games decreased or increased in popularity over time?

How have their sales figures varied between geographic regions over time?

Tools

Excel: Grouping data, summarizing data, descriptive analysis, Excel visualizations

Powerpoint: Presenting results to stakeholders

Presentation: I put together a report, and a presentation to communicate my findings to the stakeholders

Insights

Genre Popularity

The company is interested in learning more about what types of games are more popular than others.

Using a pivot table, I created bar charts with the total sales for each genre to view their popularity rankings.

I discovered the most popular video game genres across all regions were action, sports, and shooter games.

This would be useful in figuring out what genres of games to develop in order to earn the most revenue.

I then looked at a normalized version of this data with a 100% stacked bar chart.

I did this to figure out what regions purchased the most of each genre. This would be useful in developing a more targeted marketing strategy for each genre.

Regional Distribution

It was assumed that sales had remained the same across all regions over the years.

After analysis and visualization with line charts, I found that sales increased from 1981 and peaked in 2008.

The proportion of sales from each region also changed with the leading region shifting from the US to Europe in 2016.

Conclusions/ Recommendations

GameCo can maximize return on investment by investing mostly in North America and Europe.

More investments should be made in Europe as the market continues to grow while fewer investments should be made in North America as the market diminishes.

The lower end of investments should go to Japan and Other regions, the same amount should be invested in both to anticipate any changes in the market.

Investments should be made in the more popular genres like action, sports, and shooter.

Some regions should be prioritized over other regions when investing in particular genres.
